Antique Ganesh Statue
Ganesh is one of the best known and loved Hindu Gods. He is the Lord of Good Fortune who provides prosperity, success and fortune. He is also the Lord of Beginnings and Remover of Obstacles.
It is said that the Goddess Parvati, wishing to bathe, created a boy and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance of her bathroom. When her husband returned from one of his battles the boy denied him access and was killed in a fit of rage, striking off his head with his sword, not realising that Ganesh was actually his son. The Goddess Parvati was so upset that to soothe her Shiva sent out his warriors to fetch the head of the first dead creature they saw, which happened be an elephant. The head was attached to Ganesh's body and he was subsequently brought back to life.
The elephants head symbolises unmatched wisdom and the gaining of knowledge through reflection and listening. As his role was his mother's doorkeeper, he is often placed facing doorways to keep out the unworthy.
